Caring for a child with ASD can be challenging on many levels, and healthy eating is no exception. A nutritious, balanced diet can make a world of difference in their ability to learn, how they manage their emotions and how they process information.
Amrita owner Arshad has a success story to share. When Arshad’s son was diagnosed with autism and severe gastrointestinal issues, he and his wife found themselves in a tough position.
They knew that the best thing for their son would be to get him on an aggressive gluten-free and dairy-free nutrition program. They also knew that they were a busy family and didn’t have time to make Pinterest-worthy Bento meals for him every couple of hours. And he was two, which meant two things: his high metabolism meant he wanted to eat often, and he didn’t care what was in his food—he just wanted it to taste good.
“He was diagnosed when he was 2 years old, and he was a kid with pretty severe gastrointestinal problems Most kids in the autism spectrum have GI issues. So, we used an allergy-friendly diet, and that really helped him get his gut back in good health, and that in turn helped him start recovering from autism. So now he’s 11, no more symptoms of autism and he’s in a mainstream class. I am also big believer in giving back to the community, so we’re based in Pleasantville, New York, we make our products in Poughkeepsie and we giveback quite heavily through local events, and through charities that support autism and other kid-specific social causes.” says Arshad, owner of Amrita Health Foods who wanted to share his story with us.
After their own struggles getting their son onto a plant-based nutrition program that worked for their family, Arshad decided that he wanted to make convenient, grab-and-go snacks that would meet everyone’s nutritional needs.
